Session IPA

Based on Beer Advocate's (and AHA's) 'Pliny the Toddler' (AHA Pliny the Toddler). We really wanted a sessionable IPA -- especially with out new kegging system. Something drinkable, but aggressively hopped. We wanted grapefruity, citrusy, tropical; instead of piney, resiny, bitter. We'll reuse the yeast for a IBA/ Black IPA more towards the Fall.

Notes:
  • Using Washed Cali Yeast originally from the Brown Ale (08/17/2013)
  • Using fresh whole leaf Cascade Hops for dry hopping from a fellow DC Homebrewer
  • Brewed 9/22/2013
    • 0.50 gallon growler with extra, Rosemary sprig added
    • 5.00 overflow, cleanup
  • 9/30/2013: dry-hopped with 2.00 ounces Simcoe pellet hops and 2.00 ounces of Cascade pellet hopes
    • planned on using 5.00 ounces whole-leaf, local Cascade hops, but problems fitting hops/hop bag/marbles into better bottle fermenter
  • 10/06/2013:
    • Kegged 5.00 gallons
    • Removed Rosemary sprig from 0.50 gallon growler
    • Bottled 0.50 gallon Rosemary with Cane Sugar
      • 1 32oz growler; 1 12oz bottle
      • Tasting: Strong, but not overpowering Rosemary flavor
  • John's Tasting Notes:10/10/2013:
    • Appearance:
      •  Hazy straw/light honey
      • Disappearing head, linger around glass sides
    • Aroma:
      • Dank and citrus; more Simcoe than Cascade
    • Flavor: Light mouthfeel, bitter, good hop flavor of fruit & citrus, lingers a little
    • Overall: exactly what John wanted from a Session IPA: drinkable, IPA hop profile, citrus
